Patrick Stewart to Play Captain Picard Again
He also teases the possible render of Professor Xavier in 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness'
Early on in the new season ofStar Trek: Picard, Jean-Luc Picard is thrust into an alternating timeline where he'southward a fascist, genocidal leader on a barbaric version of 24th-century Earth. One of the first voices he hears is Q, an omnipotent, anointed being (played by veteran character player John de Lancie) who toyed with him throughout the entire run ofStar Expedition: The Next Generation. The iiTrek veterans hadn't been face-to-face since that testify ended dorsum in 1994.

Part of that redemption involves a new look at Picard's childhood, and his inability to find lasting love. "We wanted to tell a story about Picard's center," says Goldsman, earlier adding, in a reference to the character receiving an bogus centre during his buck years at Starfleet (and his consciousness existence transferred into an android'southward body in this series' first season), "Or his spiritual eye, since God knows he's had several versions of his actual heart. We institute this infinite and we thought, 'Wow, no ane has shined a light on that.' You always say, 'What happened with him and Beverly [Crusher]? Why doesn't whatsoever romantic relationship stick? From the very starting time, the producers had a three-flavour arc in mind. "But we didn't know nosotros were going to get iii seasons," says Goldsman. She doesn't know what the divergences [in the timeline] are, only if you get back to [the classicSide by side Generation episode] 'Yesterday's Enterprise,' she knows that Tasha [Yar] ain't supposed to be there." [The graphic symbol died in the first flavour ofTNG.]
"Q is a genie," continues Goldsman. "Q can create an environment for us that is the canvas on which we can lay out the drama of Picard'south inner life, because Q is the closest thing that Star Trek has to magic. Their relational connection to Jean-Luc and their powers made them the ideal bookends for this story."
Q's part in the Star Expedition universe goes all the way back to the pilot episode ofThe Adjacent Generation, when he put all of mankind on trial and forced Picard to serve as its defender. "The character is basically a God," says de Lancie. "When it started, I thought to myself, 'OK, he'southward a God. But then what does he do?' So I idea, 'I'm an omnipotent existence that's too stupid to know it. I'm a God with clay feet.'"
He played Q as both a playful clown and a figure of incredible menace and doom, often going back and forth with piddling warning. "My feeling was he couldn't merely be one thing," says de Lancie. "I wanted to break it up. There's the seltzer-down-your-pants stuff so the dangerous stuff. That means y'all in the audience are never quite certain what you're getting."
Initially, de Lancie thought Q would never be seen once more later theNext Generation airplane pilot. He'd spent most of his career guesting on shows likeThe Vi Million Dollar Human being,Barnaby Jones, andMacGyver, and this seemed like another 1-shot deal. Simply on the third day of shooting, he heard a vocalization from behind him while continuing effectually the prepare.
